A leaf embedded four inches horizontally into the side of the glacial wall. In the ceaseless glare of the sun, the dark surface of the leaf retained more heat than the ice it fell upon. That heat leeched into the ice, continuously renewing a thin layer of water, which evaporated around and through the porous leaf like wax dissolving from a lit candle.
