Wednesday - Today we make what will be our last long (150 mi) drive for awhile, to Haines, back in Alaska. Margaret voted this section as the most scenic so far, but she hadn't seen the southeast yet. We took many photos of more mountains, lakes, wildflowers, snow patches, turbulent streams, ponds, etc. At Haines Summit (1014 ft high) Garrett threw a snowball at the truck window. After US Customs, a sign, "Welcome to Alaska," and the rushing, roiling Chilkat River, we entered Haines. We had reservations for the Port Chilkoot Camper Park but their bathroom and shower facilities were old, "rustic" and dirty. We went to the other side of town to Haines Hitch-up and RV Park (Good Sam recommended) with fantastic showers, a good (according to Margaret) gift shop, and very nice views of the surrounding mountains. Some large shrubs gave partial shade so we pulled a picnic table near The Bean and opened our new canopy, just like in the trailer magazines.
