North to Alaska - Abridged Version - Day 5 (May 21)

Friday, May 21 - 8:30 AM: Sunny at first but soon turned overcast with an ominous-looking weather front coming in (49 degrees). Saw a sign with a silhouette of a Tyrannosauras Rex and the words, "Report Sightings," then another depicting a moose. After stopping and taking pictures at Bijoux Falls we came upon 3 black bears right next to the road. We continued recording the scenery as the road became rougher and we climbed over Pine Pass Summit with our first snow-clad mountains in the distance. Gas in Chetwynd ($66.51, Canadian) in the rain (42 degrees) and a sign: "DIANE'S DISASTER CLEAN-UP & BLASTING" which concerned us a little until we decided it meant "Disaster clean-up and blasting." Saw more moose signboards but no live ones. We stopped at Northern Lights RV Park in Dawson Creek, unhooked and visited the local tourist center-museum where we watched a film about the construction of the Alaskan Highway from "Mile Zero." Garrett located a place with an internet connection from which he could load pictures onto the web site and check our e-mail. Early to bed.
