In 1913, debris blasted from the canyon walls by workers on the Canadian National Railway made Hells Gate all but impassable to spawning sockeye samon. With a vital fishery in danger of collapse, a joint Canada/United States engineering project created the International Fishways (at the bottom of this picture), which enable the salmon to continue upstream.
