Monday, May 24 - 9 AM: After gassing up ($63.95, Canadian) we drove along the border between BC and the Yukon Territory on a sunny day. Around noon we stopped at Rancheria Falls Recreation Site, a boardwalk trail through a beautiful boreal forest leading to viewing platforms overlooking two spectacular waterfalls. Later we crossed the continental divide and discovered 2 potty stops, one on each side of the sign indicating the divide. Any liquid spilled at the potty on the west side drained to the Smith River, then the Yukon River to the Bering Sea. From the east potty, spillage went to the Rancheria River, the Liard and MacKenzie Rivers and the Beaufort Sea on the Arctic Ocean (2650 miles away). Just after noon we found the Dawson Peaks RV Park, 7 miles south of Teslin, situated on scenic Teslin Lake. After exploring and taking many pictures we ate an early supper (chili and salad) followed by strawberry-rhubarb pie at the RV park restaurant. There we met the owner, a retired teacher-pincipal, who had homesteaded the site several years ago. He has been building (learning as he goes) trying to make, in his words, "the most beautiful park along the Alaskan Highway." He and his hard-working wife / cook / housekeeper / gardener / waitress have done a great job.
